Since the application of composites has been extended to stress-bearing restorations in
posterior teeth, wear deserves attention. So the aim of this study was to find the
factors which influenced the wear in the posterior composite resins.
Measurements of in vitro wear for 4 posterior composite resins and amalgam were
conducted using a new device in which de Gee et al. developed, and to calculate the
relative wear, the profilometric data and photographs of the unworn and worn surfaces
were processed. This study presented the wear rate relative to that of an amalgam.
In addition to the measurements of hardness, compressive strength and compressive
fatigue limit were made. And then they were compared with the wear rate by
establishing the mutual linear correlation factor.
Meanwhile, this study also observed the worn surfaces and the fractured surfaces of
compressive strength and compressive fatigue limit using the scanning electron
microscope.
The results obtained from this study were as follows :
1. There were no correlationships between wear rate and hardness, compressive
strength and compressive fatigue limit.(¥ã=0.69, 0.64, 0.63 N=4 P>0.01)
2. The more filler contents (vol %), the greater V. H. N., compressive strength and
compressive fatigue limit were to be found.(¥ã=0.86, 0.90, 0.90, N=4, P<0.01)
3. There was no correlationship between wear rate and filler contents.(¥ã=0.25, N=4,
P>0.01)
4. The striation type was to be found in the fractured surfaces of compressive fatigue
limit.
5. The crack growth was initiated at the regions of porosities.
